A 70-year-old black walnut tree came down near Edgewater Street NW, finishing off a nearly six-month process to remove the contentious tree.
The estimated 60-foot-tall tree, located at the old West Salem City Hall Building, was scheduled to be taken out by owner Marvin Sannes last year when Head Start moved into the building. The tree is located on the playground for the program and needed to be removed for safety reasons and to expand space for the program, Sannes said.
“For us, when we take on a site and we’re looking for someone to partner with, we’re looking for an adequate space for kids indoors to have enough classroom space, and outdoors we’re looking for around 1,500 square feet,” said Head Start Program Director Jon Reeves. [...]
